Winter Wanderings

Winter in Utah can be harsh, but it’s also one of the most beautiful times of the year. The snow-covered mountains and canyons create a winter wonderland of ice-frosted trees and crisp, clear air that’s perfect for snowshoeing.

The snow acts as a natural sound barrier, making everything around us quiet and peaceful. As we make our way along the trail, we hear only the sound of snow crunching underfoot and the occasional bird call.

One of our favorite winter wanderings on snowshoes is Emigration Canyon, a beautiful and historic canyon, which transforms into a winter wonderland with stunning mountain views. As we make our way up the trail on snowshoes, we are surrounded by the beauty of nature, both calming and invigorating. Emigration Canyon trail is suitable for all skill levels, making it a great spot for beginners or families with children. The trail is relatively flat and easy to follow, we don’t ever have to worry about getting lost or getting into a difficult situation!

The historical significance of the area adds to the whole experience. The canyon was one of the primary routes used by pioneers as they made their way to Salt Lake City in the mid-1800s. Snowshoeing in the canyon allows us to feel part of something bigger than ourselves, as we connect with the rich history of the area.

Another area we enjoy snowshoeing is Millcreek Canyon, just outside Salt Lake City. The canyon is stunning in the winter, with the snow-covered trees towering above us and the sound of the creek burbling through the ice in the background. As we hike deeper into the canyon, the scenery is breathtaking, and we sometimes catch an occasional glimpse of winter wildlife.

American Fork Canyon, a short drive from Provo, is another favorite place to snowshoe. The canyon boasts breathtaking views of Mount Timpanogos and the surrounding peaks, and the snowshoe trails are perfect for beginners as well as experienced hikers.

Famous for their world-class ski resorts, Little Cottonwood Canyon and Big Cottonwood Canyon, just outside of Salt Lake City, also are great spots for winter snowshoeing. These canyons are stunningly beautiful in the winter, with snow-capped mountains towering above and frozen waterfalls lining the walls of the canyon. As we make our way up the trails in these canyons on snowshoes, we are in awe of the inspiring views of the surrounding wilderness!
